Griefy Girl’s Guide to Summer, Blog 4
Summer Memories Can Sting (and Sing)
Summer has a soundtrack.
A song that reminds you of them.
A scent that takes you right back.
A fireworks show that used to bring laughter—and now brings tears.
Here’s the thing about memories:
They’re time travelers.
They can make you smile one second…and cry the next.
And that’s okay.
Grief doesn’t erase the good. It just makes it complicated.
So what do you do when memories sneak up and sting?
Here are a few gentle ways to manage the summer memory ambush:
🖼️ Name it out loud.
Say it: “This reminds me of…” It helps release the memory instead of stuffing it down.
📸 Create a new ritual.
If you can’t face the lake trip like you used to, light a candle and play their favorite summer song at home. Traditions can evolve.
📝 Capture the moment.
Write down the memory—good, hard, funny, sacred. Don’t let it disappear. Memories are part of how we carry our people forward.
It’s okay to cry during the fireworks.
It’s okay to laugh at the memory of a terrible family camping trip.
It’s okay to feel both. At once.
That’s grief. That’s summer. That’s love, still showing up.
