You Don’t Have to Go to the BBQ

You Don’t Have to Go to the BBQ

Griefy Girl’s Guide to Summer, Part 3
You Don’t Have to Go to the BBQ

The invitations keep coming:
Come to the lake! Stop by the BBQ! Bring a side dish and a smile!

But here’s the truth:
You don’t have to show up to every party just because you’re invited.

When you’re grieving, summer gatherings can feel like…a lot.
Too many people. Too many happy families. Too much pretending you’re okay.

You’re allowed to say no.

Here are 3 ways to gracefully skip the BBQ (without guilt):

  • Just say no.
A simple: “Thanks for thinking of me, but I can’t make it this time” works. No explanation needed.
  • Give yourself an out.
If you want to try, but aren’t sure how you’ll feel, say: “I may just stop by for a little bit.” And leave when you’re ready.
  • Have a Plan B.
Line up something that feels good for you instead—a quiet dinner with a trusted friend, or even a night in with a favorite movie.

Your grief doesn’t take a summer break—and your boundaries are valid.

So if you’re not feeling the BBQ vibes this weekend? Stay home. Rest. Breathe.
